GHK-Cu Hair Growth: Does GHK-Cu Help With Hair Growth According to Research?

You’ve heard all about the GHK-Cu benefits for skin. But there are three decades worth of research on the GHK-Cu hair growth benefits, too. How does GHK-Cu help with hair growth, you ask? There are actually a few mechanisms at play - from influencing the hair growth cycle to changing how your follicles react to DHT and more.

We’ve pulled insights from the strongest clinical studies on GHK-Cu for hair growth and polled a few experts to see what they had to say about using a copper peptide serum for hair.

Background on GHK-Cu 

GHK-Cu is short for glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine copper. This tripeptide is naturally made in the body, circulating through your blood plasma, saliva, and urine. But its production peaks when you’re young and levels fall off pretty sharply as you get older.

Researchers started to ask, is this molecule linked to some of the signs of aging? Thinner hair, fine lines in skin, etc. It makes sense - your body makes less GHK-Cu, and it starts to show up in your appearance.

Today, we know a lot more about the connection between GHK-Cu and skin. Using a GHK-Cu serum for hair, though, is something we’re still learning about in real time. So, does GHK-Cu help with hair growth? 

Does GHK-Cu Help With Hair Growth?

The short answer is yes - at least, that’s our stance. We arrived here for two reasons. There’s legitimate GHK-Cu hair growth evidence. And our customers who have given our GHK-Cu hair serum a chance have seen remarkable results. 

Clinical trials and anecdotal evidence together is more than enough for us to advocate for GHK-Cu for hair. But before we can get into how GHK-Cu supports healthy hair growth, we need to take a step back and explain the hair growth cycle. 

Understanding the Hair Growth Cycle

There are three hair follicle cycles:

  • Anagen: Active growth (2-7 years)
  • Catagen: Transition (2 weeks)
  • Telogen: Rest and shedding (3 months)

You end up with rapid shedding and a thinning hairline/bald spots when your hair spends less time in the anagen phase and more time resting. It makes sense when you think about it. Shedding is totally normal. But you’re losing hair faster than it grows back. That’s the problem.

So how does GHK-Cu help with hair growth? 

The Connection Between Follicle Size and the Anagen Phase

The first mechanism researchers found behind GHK-Cu hair growth benefits can be traced back to 2008. Dr. Loren Pickart published a review in the Journal of Biomaterials Science showing that GHK-Cu could “increase the proliferation of fibroblasts and keratinocytes; nerve outgrowth, angiogenesis, and hair follicle size.”1

In other words, it helped make larger hair follicles. Bigger hair follicles can produce larger, denser-looking strands of hair. Denser strands of hair remain more rooted to the scalp, so they’re less likely to shed prematurely. That same research paper pointed out that GHK-Cu could lead to better hair transplant results, too.

This wasn’t the first time we saw reason to use GHK-Cu for hair, either. An earlier study back in 1993 from the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that copper peptides were on par with minoxidil for enlarging hair follicles.2 And as you’ll learn later on in this GHK-Cu hair growth guide, copper peptides can do that with fewer side effects.

Jumpstarting the Hair Growth Phase Through Stem Cell Activation

You know now that getting your hair to move from telogen (resting phase) to anagen (growth phase) is key to supercharging hair growth. Stem cells in the follicle bulge region have to be activated for this to occur. So how does GHK-Cu help with hair growth here?

Bear with us, because we’re going to pull from some really complex research here. We’ll do our best to break it down simply. Pickart and Margolina's 2018 analysis in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences found that GHK-Cu can modulate over 4,000 human genes. One set relevant to today’s conversation is tied the Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway.3

Why does that matter? Because Wnt signaling is directly correlated to hair follicle cycling. Keeping this pathway active is how follicle stem cells get pushed back into the growth phase. 

Calming Responses to DHT

You’ve probably heard of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) if you’ve done any research into hair loss. This hormone is notorious for shrinking hair follicles and causing shedding. It’s the main culprit behind patterned hair loss in men and women alike.

DHT latches onto androgen receptors on weak, vulnerable follicles and slowly but surely shrinks them down over time. GHK-Cu doesn’t kill DHT or anything like that. But it can modulate the follicle’s local environment so DHT’s effects aren’t as powerful.

The evidence here for GHK-Cu comes from the gene expression data from Pickart's work we talked about above. GHK-Cu can influence the genes involved in TGF signaling and extracellular matrix remodeling.3  That just means it may improve the tissue around follicles, keeping hair rooted in place.

There’s a more recent study from the 2026 review in Biomedicines basically confirming what Pickart discovered. GHK-Cu does its thing as a signal peptide, telling the skin around your follicles to build new blood vessels and beef up the structural support holding follicles in place.4

Supporting a Healthier Inflammatory Response

This is one of the most well-documented benefits of GHK-Cu in general, and it has powerful implications for hair. The copper peptide can support a healthier inflammatory response. That matters because chronic scalp inflammation is one of the biggest causes of shedding. 

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Elizabeth Bahar Houshmand spoke to this, saying “topical peptides help hydrate the scalp and reduce inflammation.”5

We can see this from the GHK-Cu hair growth evidence on gene expression. It may downregulate pro-inflammatory cytokines (which can lead to free radicals wreaking havoc in the scalp), while upregulating the pathways linked to repair.3 

This means the peptide creates better conditions in the scalp for healthy hair growth to occur. Follicles that aren’t under constant attack from inflammation can stay in the anagen phase for longer. 

Is There Real GHK-Cu Hair Growth Evidence? 

We feel strongly that GHK-Cu for hair is powerful. But some naysayers question the quality of evidence on this copper peptide. Just how strong is the research?

The strongest GHK-Cu hair growth clinical study in published literature is a 2016 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in Annals of Dermatology. 45 men with pattern hair loss were treated using a complex of GHK-Cu peptide and 5-aminolevulinic acid for six months.6 Their hair growth count went from 52.6 to 71.5. The control group only saw an increase of 9.6 hairs. The men who used copper peptides didn’t experience any adverse effects, either.

That’s strong evidence, right? We think so. However, some people aren’t convinced because GHK-Cu wasn’t working in isolation. They say it’s impossible to confirm the real source of improvement - was it GHK-Cu or the 5-ALA?

This is the limitation in current GHK-Cu hair growth research. There’s nothing looking at the peptide by itself in human studies. We do have the animal data from Uno and Kurata, which found that copper peptides could produce comparable follicle enlargement results to minoxidil.2

We also think the gene expression evidence is fairly strong. There are other studies we referenced above finding reason to include copper peptides in your hair growth regimen, too. When you pull all these sources together, it’s hard to argue against GHK-Cu for hair growth. 

Why Experts Advocate For Topical GHK-Cu for Hair Growth

Licensed dermatologists, like Dr. Jenna Queller, agree that copper peptides “help strengthen follicles, encourage blood flow and support thicker, healthier hair growth.5 But how you use them matters. Topical application is the best way to tap into the benefits of GHK-Cu for hair. 

Benefits of Topical GHK-Cu Serums

Any hair growth product should be applied to the scalp. GHK-Cu is no exception. You can get the peptide where it’s needed most this way. The vast majority of published GHK-Cu hair growth research was conducted with topical or localized delivery methods.

Risks and Limitations of Injectable GHK-Cu

The FDA obviously agrees, as injectable copper peptides were recently added to its Category 2 restricted compounding list pending further review. There are just too many question marks on injectable peptides at this time. Not enough answers. None of the research linked above used injectable GHK-Cu. That not only means we can’t be sure it’s effective, but that we have to assume it’s unsafe until proven otherwise.

Tips on Boosting GHK-Cu Hair Growth Serum Absorption

Beyond choosing a high-quality topical serum like that we have in store for you at PLU Laboratories, there are some things you can do to maximize absorption. It all comes down to boosting blood flow at the scalp.

There are two ways you can go about this - the first is simpler and more comfortable. Scalp massage. You should massage your scalp for a few minutes before applying the GHK-Cu serum. Then, apply a few drops to your fingertips (or directly to the scalp) and continue massaging for a few more minutes. 

The other way really ramps up circulation, but can be slightly painful. Dermarolling. This involves using a little tool with tiny needles on it, all over the scalp. You create microabrasions in the scalp which stimulate your body’s natural healing response, maximizing blood flow to the area. This is something you only need to do 2-3 times a week. It’s easy to overdo it.

Other than that, here are some quick tips on using GHK-Cu for hair topically:

  • Always apply the serum to a clean, dry scalp. Buildup on the scalp will block absorption. Wet hair can block absorption. 
  • Less is more. Just use a few drops of the serum and focus more on consistency. Once a day, every day, for at least 3 months before expecting to see noticeable changes.
  • Do not put on a hat or lay down on your pillow until the serum has dried on your scalp. Wait at least 10-15 minutes. Otherwise, the serum may rub off.

Who Should Try GHK-Cu For Hair Growth? 

At this point, you’re probably wondering if GHK-Cu is the hair care secret you’ve been searching for all this time. Some people are better candidates for GHK-Cu for hair than others. We’ve found that it works best on early-to-moderate thinning when you don’t want a pharmaceutical approach.

Does that mean it’s not worth trying if you’re completely bald already? Not necessarily. It may reawaken hair growth follicles and encourage new growth. But you’ll just have to set your expectations. Not even minoxidil (the most proven hair growth solution in the world) works all the time for those who have lost all their hair.

Are There Any Side Effects or Contraindications? 

Part of what makes GHK-Cu such a great choice for your hair care routine is its strong safety profile with very few documented side effects. The largest GHK-Cu hair growth clinical study to date (Lee 2016) didn’t find any adverse events across all participants for a 6 month period.6 

We sell our own GHK-Cu serum and have had tons of conversations with our customers who tried it. Side effects are rare. And when they do occur, they are mild and temporary. Mild redness and itching during the first few days. 

That being said, people with Wilson's disease should not use GHK-Cu for hair. This genetic condition forces the body to hold onto copper, and excess accumulation can be harmful. This is a very rare example of those who are not good candidates for our GHK-Cu hair growth solution.

Pregnant or nursing women should talk to their doctor before using GHK-Cu for hair as well.

Setting Realistic Expectations on GHK-Cu Hair Growth

The GHK-Cu hair growth evidence is strong. But we want to be very clear that not everyone will have the same experience, and the timeline isn’t as fast as you may hope. 

In general, hair growth takes time. So, how long does GHK-Cu take to work? Visible improvements can take between 6-8 weeks. Maybe even longer. It’s hard to say since we only have a handful of studies to go off of.

Trichologist Hannah Gaboardi says it best. “Since it’s so new, we don't have enough long-term research compared to the likes of minoxidil or other DHT blockers, or even in-clinic treatments like PRP.”7

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try it. Just that you should go into the journey with the right mindset. This is a long-term approach to improving the appearance of your hair. Be comfortable waiting as long as 3-4 months before noticing visible changes. 

Is it Worth Considering AHK-Cu Instead? 

We know you came here curious about GHK-Cu hair growth clinical studies. And they’re strong. But AHK-Cu is another copper peptide we’re seeing more and more evidence for as it pertains to hair growth.

This is a synthetic version of GHK-Cu - meaning it’s made in a lab. Not in your body like GHK-Cu is. Alanine replaced glycine (hence the naming difference between AHK-Cu vs GHK-Cu).
